Three days of athletic action and family fun began as participants and their supporters streamed into Nirwana Gardens, the customary venue of the celebrated Bintan Triathlon event which took place in the Indonesian tropical haven of Bintan.
A fever pitch of enthusiasm in the crowds was evident at the flag-off—the opening segment was the Bintan Swim Classic, which catapults contestants into the completely clear and level waters off the Nirwana Sea Sports Center for a 1km swim course. However, for most participating in the Bintan Triathlon, the main highlights were the Sprint Distance (750m swim/20km cycle/5km run) and Olympic Distance (1.5km swim/40km cycle/10km run) races on Saturday.
While central Bintan is generally hot and humid, competitors of the Olympic Distance course were fortunate as a cloudy sky offered distinctly cooler temperatures that contrasted with the morning race.
